Footing Drain Install in Fairfax, Alexandria & Arlington, VA

A footing drain, also known as a foundation drain, is a drain system positioned along the outside of the foundation wall’s foot, directing any incoming moisture and water away from the foundation.
The footing drain is a highly effective water drainage system. A perforated pipe is installed around the perimeter of the foundation to collect seeping ground water and discharge it away from the foundation. Generally it drains to a sump pump, or storm sewer.

Why Does a Footing Drain Malfunction?
Improper Installation and/or Design: If the drain isn’t installed or designed on the level of your basement footing it cannot collect the water that seeps through your basement.
- Backfilling of Soil: When your building was constructed the ground was excavated and then backfilled after placing the foundation. While backfilling soil most of the time the structure of the footing drain gets damaged. Also, the backfilled soil is loosely packed than the untouched ground. The looser the soil is the greater it absorbs water and expands, putting pressure on the footing drain. When excessive soil and debris put pressure on the filter fabric of the drain pipe water cannot enter the pipe. The drainage system gets obstructed.
- Mud Sediments: Generally the pipe is coated with a filter to only let water in, however over time eventually muddy water, and particles enter the drain and clog it.
